Thick odorless colorless liquid. Mixes with water. (USCG, 1999) Propane-1,2-diol is the simplest member of the class of propane-1,2-diols, consisting of propane in which a hydrogen at position 1 and a hydrogen at position 2 are substituted by hydroxy groups. A colourless, viscous, hygroscopic, low-melting (-59℃) and high-boiling (188℃) liquid with low toxicity, it is used as a solvent, emulsifying agent, and antifreeze. It has a role as a protic solvent, an allergen, a human xenobiotic metabolite and a mouse metabolite. It is a member of propane-1,2-diols and a glycol

1. It is an important raw material for unsaturated polyesters, epoxy resins, polyurethane resins, plasticizers and surfactants. It is widely used as a humectant, antifreeze, lubricant and solvent in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In the food industry, it is mainly used as a food emulsifier; an excellent solvent for condiments and pigments, and a solvent for fragrances and edible colorants.

2. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is often used as a solvent, softener and excipient for the production of various ointments and creams, as well as a solvent for formulations, preservatives, ointments, vitamins, penicillin, etc.

3. It is also used as a tobacco humectant and antifungal agent, a lubricant for food processing equipment and a solvent for food marking inks.

4. Its aqueous solution is an effective antifreeze. It is also used as a tobacco wetting agent, antifungal agent, fruit ripening preservative, antifreeze and heat carrier.
